In this Update:
Introducing Job Shadow Tyler McCreeryThis week in Harrisburg, I had the honor of introducing Northern Cambria School District graduate and rising Slippery Rock University freshman Tyler McCreery, who was my job shadow for a day. Langerholc Votes for Largest Tax Cut in PA History
I proudly voted to deliver the largest tax cut in the history of the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. House Bill 1667 repeals the commonwealth’s gross receipts tax, delivering $1.7 billion in savings to Pennsylvania ratepayers this year alone. The bill also shuts down a tax credit that has been exploited by data centers across the commonwealth. The legislation also significantly strengthens the commonwealth’s EITC program by increasing scholarships for Pennsylvania students by $25 million, bringing the total to $705 million. Additionally, it establishes a School Supplies Tax Holiday to support teachers and families as they prepare for the upcoming school year. Today’s vote delivers real, immediate relief to Pennsylvania families and protects students from the drastic, politically motivated measures taken by the House of Representatives. I was proud to stand firmly behind this measure and ensure that Pennsylvania tax dollars are returned to the people of the commonwealth. The bill now returns to the House of Representatives, where it requires one more day and one more vote before it can be sent to the governor’s desk. Protecting Communities from Convicted MurderersThe Senate approved legislation I sponsored with Sen. Lisa Baker (R-20) to reform the commonwealth’s second‑degree murder sentencing framework in line with recent court rulings. Senate Bill 1400 updates sentencing and parole procedures to reflect the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s decision in Commonwealth v. Lee. Without legislative action, the commonwealth could be forced to release convicted murderers, creating significant public‑safety risks. This pro‑law‑enforcement, community‑safety measure is supported by Attorney General Dave Sunday, the Pennsylvania Fraternal Order of Police and the Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association. If the House does not pass Senate Bill 1400, convicted murderers could be released into our communities and freely walk our streets. This cannot happen. We in the Senate stood for victims of violent crime, with law enforcement, and for the rule of law. The bill now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration. If the House does not pass Senate Bill 1400 by July 24, 2026, the process could begin to release 1,165 convicted murderers into communities across Pennsylvania. Langerholc Bill to Support Law Enforcement Passes UnanimouslyThe Senate unanimously approved my legislation to provide current and retired law enforcement with discounted hunting and fishing licenses. Under Senate Bill 469, law enforcement officials would be able to acquire each license for $1. This legislation is a small but meaningful token of appreciation for the unwavering dedication and service of the current and retired men and women of our law enforcement community. Day after day, they face demanding and often dangerous situations to keep our communities safe, and this measure formally recognizes the commitment they have shown throughout their careers. The measure now goes to the House of Representatives for consideration. Reducing the Backlog in PA Rape Kit TestingFor years, Pennsylvania has worked to reduce the backlog of untested rape kits and to ensure survivors of sexual assault are treated with the urgency and dignity they deserve. In 2024, we passed a law to move forward with a statewide sexual assault evidence tracking system so survivors can better understand where their kit is in the testing process. During the implementation of the system, inconsistencies in the collection of kits were found from one police jurisdiction to another. Senate Bill 1212, which I co-prime sponsored, establishes a clear, statewide expectation that collected sexual assault evidence should be treated consistently. The measure was sent to the House of Representatives for consideration. Read more about the latest action to reduce the backlog in rape kit testing here. Statewide Transportation Improvement ProgramThe 2027 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP), a list of transportation projects identified for funding statewide, is available for public review and comment through June 30. The STIP is made up of 24 regional Transportation Improvement Programs and a variety of additional programs. It is updated every two years after the regional programs are submitted and approved, and will be adopted as part of the 12-Year Program update by the State Transportation Commission in August. You can review the plan and submit your comments here. Property Tax/Rent Rebate ApplicationThe property tax/rent rebate application has been extended to December 31, 2026.
