Senate Guest Chaplain: V. Rev. Matthew BaumI had the honor of welcoming the Very Reverend Matthew Baum to Harrisburg this week. Father Baum, rector at St. John Gaulbert Cathedral and pastor at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Johnstown, served as the Senate Guest Chaplain, and offered opening prayer for Senate session on Wednesday. Child Advocacy MeetingAlso this week, I met with CenClear Acting CEO Mary Tatum, Child Advocacy Center of Clearfield County Director Sierra Clark, and Abbie Newman of Missions Kids CAC in Montgomery County, to discuss the work of Children’s Advocacy Centers across Pennsylvania. Thank you for your continued dedication to child advocacy across our commonwealth! Johnstown Flood AnniversaryThis past weekend, Cortney and I visited the Johnstown Flood National Memorial for the 137th anniversary of the 1889 Johnstown Flood. The memorial was lit up with 2,209 paper bag lanterns, with each bearing the name of a victim of the flood. The lanterns were created by Forest Hills School District elementary school students. It was an honor to visit the memorial and pay respects to the victims of the flood. DuBois Senior ExpoThank you to all the attendees and exhibitors who came out to the DuBois Mall for the annual DuBois Senior Expo. Task Force on Child Protection in the Digital Age
To make sure state laws keep pace with emerging online threats, the Senate voted to establish a Task Force on Child Protection in the Digital Age. Senate Resolution 244, which I co-prime sponsored alongside Sens. Tracy Pennycuick (R-24) and Scott Martin (R-13), would direct the Joint State Government Commission to convene a task force to review Pennsylvania’s laws, assess new technologies and identify legal gaps in protections for children in the digital environment. The commission will issue a recommendation for action to the General Assembly. The Senate’s unanimous approval strengthens and expands our ongoing commitment to protecting children from the threats of the digital world. This task force will equip the Commonwealth to anticipate emerging challenges and safeguard the well‑being of our youth. The proposal builds on previous work by the legislature: In 2024, we passed a law to combat AI generated child sexual abuse materials (CSAM). In 2025, we acted to classify deepfakes as digital forgery for more severe punishment. The Senate also approved bills to strengthen reporting requirements for AI-generated CSAM and to establish commonsense safeguards for AI chatbots accessible by minors. Pennsylvania recorded more than 18,700 cases of Lyme disease in 2025, and the Centers for Disease Control estimates the true number may be much higher due to underreporting. Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses can cause serious long-term health complications, particularly when left untreated. Nearly 55% of ticks tested in Pennsylvania were found to carry at least one tick-borne pathogen, and blacklegged ticks have now been identified in all 67 counties. You can protect yourself by using repellent, avoiding brushy areas and checking your body and pets after outdoor activities. Learn more about protecting yourself from ticks here. Remembering D-Day
On June 6, 1944, the Allies launched the largest amphibious invasion in history, engaging the forces of Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. Over 9,000 Allied soldiers were killed, wounded, or missing in the landings, which marked a turning point in the war, leading to the liberation of western Europe, and the downfall of Nazi Germany. May we never forget the courage and sacrifice of these brave soldiers. News for Veterans Sign Up
