In this Update:
Senate Passes Langerholc Bill to Eliminate Emissions TestingThe Senate approved, in a bipartisan manner, my legislation to eliminate the commonwealth’s outdated vehicle emissions program. Senate Bill 1298 provides for the removal of all 25 counties currently subjected to the annual emissions testing. Further, the legislation clarifies that no additional counties can be added into the program, protecting vehicle owners across the commonwealth. People are being squeezed from every direction, and the last thing they should be forced to bankroll are outdated mandates that do nothing but drain their wallets. If a mandate doesn’t serve the public anymore, it has no business siphoning money from working families. The Senate passed legislation I sponsored to reform the emissions program in February 2025, as well as each legislative session since the 2019-2020 legislative session. All measures have failed to receive consideration in the House of Representatives. It is beyond time that the House of Representatives bring vehicle emissions reform to a vote and give Pennsylvania motorists much needed relief. The measure now goes to House of Representatives for consideration. Langerholc Bill to Protect 2A Rights Passes SenateThe Senate passed my legislation to protect the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens. Senate Bill 822, which strengthens Pennsylvania’s state preemption over regulating firearms and ammunition, would prevent local governments from enacting ordinances that are more restrictive than those established by the General Assembly. Allowing local governments to establish a patchwork of inconsistent gun laws would make it impossible for Pennsylvania residents, along with citizens from other states, to travel without fear of inadvertently breaking a local law they were unaware of. Senate Bill 822, which passed with bipartisan support, also reinforces and restores the original intent of Pennsylvania’s Uniform Firearms Act, ensuring consistent and clear regulations across the state. The bill has been sent to the House of Representatives for consideration. Strengthening Penalties for Attempted Murder of PoliceThe Senate approved legislation I co-sponsored that would close a gap in state law and imposing tougher penalties on individuals who attempt to murder a law enforcement officer and cause serious bodily injury. Under current law, the penalty for attempted murder of a law enforcement officer could be as little as seven years in prison. Senate Bill 1284 establishes a 20-year mandatory minimum sentence and a maximum of up to life in prison. The measure was passed on Police Officers’ Memorial Day in Pennsylvania, which honors the brave men and women of law enforcement. It now heads to the House of Representatives for consideration. America 250 Ceremonial CelebrationIn honor of America’s 250th birthday, the Pennsylvania Senate held a ceremonial gathering at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, only the fourth time the Senate has met outside the State Capitol in Harrisburg in the last 100 years. To commemorate America250, the Senate partnered with America250PA to invite one high school student from each Senate District to attend the historic meeting. To select a student from the 35th Senatorial District, I held an essay contest that posed the question: “In recognition of the 250th anniversary of the United States, what does the American Dream mean to you?” Tyler McCreery from Northern Cambria, a high schooler at Northern Cambria School District, wrote the winning essay and joined me at the ceremony. Congratulations, Tyler, and thank you for joining me in Philadelphia to celebrate our nation’s founding! Recognizing Richland Competitive Spirit TeamThis week on the Senate floor, I had the honor of introducing the Richland High School Competitive Spirit Team, who captured their second consecutive Small Varsity Division title at this year’s PIAA Class 2A Competitive Spirit Championship held at the 1st Summit Arena at Cambria County War Memorial. Congratulations! Recognizing Bishop McCort Competitive Spirit TeamI also had the honor of introducing the Bishop McCort Catholic High School Competitive Spirit Team to the Senate. The team won the Large Varsity Division title during this year’s PIAA Class 2A Competitive Spirit Championship held at the 1st Summit Arena at Cambria County War Memorial. Congratulations! Nurses Honor Guard IntroducedI was pleased to welcome members of the Central Pennsylvania Nurses Honor Guard to the State Capitol and introduce them on the floor of the Senate during National Nurses Week! The Central Pennsylvania Nurses Honor Guard is a volunteer group of active and retired nurses who render honors at the funerals of their fellow nurses. Aerospace Day in HarrisburgI attended the third annual Aerospace Day in Harrisburg, where I had the opportunity to hear from students and experts in the aviation field. The aerospace industry is growing in our region as a result of the John Murtha Cambria County Airport becoming the first Advanced Air Mobility site in Pennsylvania, focusing on drone technology, medical supply delivery, and autonomous aviation! Visit to Cambria County Clothing BoutiqueThank you to Lisa Campbell of the Cambria County Clothing Boutique (CCCB) for the tour and conversation. CCCB is an organization that provides clean, seasonally appropriate clothing, shoes, and hygiene items to school-based clothing closets within Cambria County. Mother’s Day and Mammo MayMother’s Day is a great time to remind Mom and all the women in your life about the importance of annual mammograms. While these low-dose x-rays are critical to a lifesaving early diagnosis of breast cancer, one in four Pennsylvania women fail to get a mammogram each year. Annual mammograms are recommended for women beginning at age 40 or as early as age 25 if a woman is considered at increased risk for breast cancer.
