HARRISBURG – Senator Wayne Langerholc, Jr. (R-35) and Representative Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Bedford/Somerset) joined state and local officials, first responders and leaders in the telecommunications industry today to announce new cell phone coverage in Hyndman/Londonderry Township area of Bedford County.
On August 2, 2017, a train derailment forced the evacuation of the town for several days, but inadequate cell coverage delayed the notification of the accident and the evacuation of some residents highlighting the long time need.
“In an emergency situation, every second counts. State and local authorities have emergency alert systems in place, but the only way we can maximize the effectiveness of these notification systems is to ensure the community has adequate cell service,” Langerholc said. “I appreciate the cooperation of FirstNet Authority and AT&T, as well as the efforts of state and local officials to help rectify this problem.”
“The need for improved cell phone coverage in the Hyndman area has been a hard fought project for me,” said Metzgar. “This announcement is a welcome step forward not only to have the ability to contact first responders but also simply bringing the area to a more even technological playing field with more urban areas.”
The announcement was made today at the Hyndman Volunteer Fire Department.
